How Much Does a Surgical Abortion Cost?

Currently, you are unable to legally have an abortion in the state of Mississippi. However, exceptions can be made to save the life of the pregnant woman or in cases of rape.[1]

If you or someone you know obtains these services outside of Mississippi, they will not be arrested or go to jail if they have complications and need medical care within the state of Mississippi.[1]

If you plan to travel to another state for an abortion, it’s important to understand that surgical procedure costs vary due to:

How many weeks pregnant you are
The type of anesthesia used
The facility where the procedure is performed

Here are the national average prices for surgical abortion[2]:

First Trimester (up to 13 weeks of pregnancy): Prices range from $600 to $979.
Second Trimester (13 to 24 weeks of pregnancy): Early in the second trimester, the average cost is $715. Later in the second trimester, the cost can range from $1,500-2,000.

These prices do not include the cost of any pre-screening services (such as an ultrasound) or follow-up care.

As of August 2026, the abortion pill can cost between $150 to $1,100 without insurance.[2]

Ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and gestational age
Lab work or blood tests

Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or anti-nausea medicine

Does Insurance Cover Abortion in Mississippi?

No. Private insurance plans and Mississippi Medicaid are prohibited from covering abortion, except in very limited circumstances.[3]

Other Important Considerations

Infection. If you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or persistent fever after taking the second medication, an infection may have developed. You may need antibiotics or even surgery to treat your condition.[6]
